Moral Depression

Moral Depression

Most people know we aren’t currently in an economic depression yet, and I’m not sure we will see one. But does that mean we are not in a depression. My suggestion is no, I think we are in a big depression.

A personal depression, a moral depression, a standards depression, whatever you want to call it, it exists and we are in it pretty deep. In this depression we can’t depend on the government to help us get out or those around us.

The only person we can depend on to help us get out is ourselves. In an economic depression like the one in the 1930’s, first the stock market crashed then people lost jobs and could hardly get by. In the depression we are facing right now, our society’s moral compass crashed and then people lost the ability to look out for each other and show respect to each other.

In this depression we can’t depend on someone to do our share, we can’t depend on financial bailouts. We need to depend on ourselves; we need to look for good role models or stories that teach good morals. We need a spiritual bailout or a bailout that reminds us to be strong and stand up for what is right.

Because this is a personal matter only we can fix it. Yes, we can be inspired by family, friends, and mentors but it is our responsibility to listen and follow their advice. Because it is our responsibility, the only one we can blame for this depression is ourselves.

Just like an economic depression starts in a single area and spreads, so does this moral depression. It began in one area and spread through the examples of others, but it can also be finished by spreading a good example.

We are all humans and as such we are capable of doing anything, so we can do this, we can become morally strong. Through looking at the good found in stories, quotes, day to day objects, and other people or hero’s we can end this moral depression and we will become morally strong.

  1. Great thought for today, Jim! I think we've got a major moral depression in the world too.
